ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine some aspects of global careers in the United States. We use contemporary career theory as a lens to examine the situation of immigrants and expatriates, as well as individuals moving outside of the United States. In line with contemporary career theories, we consider how information technology can be leveraged in order to develop a global career without physical migration. In addition, information technology can be coupled with rapid transportation in order to manage a global career without either short-term or long-term relocation. Finally, we turn a critical eye toward what remains problematic in the study of global careers from the US perspective and identify some areas of research that can be explored.
