ABSTRACT
People have always moved from the place where they were born to different locations all over the world. In most cases, the main reason for this decision is the search for a better life. Portugal is no exception. Emigration has always been present in Portuguese society. More recently, with firms taking a leading role in business scenarios, a new approach to international mobility has started to gain relevance. In this chapter, we will focus on global careers in the Portuguese context. We will explore how Portuguese people have always been fascinated with travel to new destinations, meeting different cultures, and sharing knowledge. This ancient Portuguese travel practice is somehow the ancestor of today’s global careers, where people move from one country to another, following a firm’s international movements. People involved in these global working movements are known as expatriates, and they form the centerpiece of this chapter.
