ABSTRACT

The United Republic of Tanzania is made up of two countries, namely Tanganyika (now ‘Mainland Tanzania’) and the Islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, collectively known as ‘Zanzibar’. The primary focus of this GIs case study is the cloves industry of Zanzibar. Mainland Tanzania is considered in the context of other industries that have GIs potential. Zanzibar was selected as the primary focus because it already has in place the appropriate legal infrastructure for the protection of GIs.
