ABSTRACT

Catecholamines are sympathomimetic hormones released by the adrenal glands in response to physical activity and emotional stress. They are part of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and their most abundant forms are adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine. Catecholamines bind to various types of adrenergic receptors consisting of different subgroups. Depending on the receptor type catecholamines induce either stimulating or inhibiting effects on the target tissue or cells where they are expressed.
