ABSTRACT

Psychoanalysis began with Sigmund Freud and has been developed by analysts who have followed him. We have found many of these ideas very helpful as we try to understand children, their families and the community in which they live. The terms that are used to name or explain these ideas will be used throughout the book. Rather than have a glossary as an appendix, we felt it was important to have the ideas and brief descriptions of them at the start of the book because they are central to the themes of all the chapters.
