ABSTRACT

The future of work and leisure can take four broad forms, based on four types of human understanding and social interaction. We can stay more or less as we are, we can go back to an earlier state of affairs, we can change a bit or we can change a lot. This, of course, is very much to over-simplify the choices, and we need to ask some additional questions. Is there a real difference between staying more or less as we are and changing a bit? When is a change a small one and when is it a large one? Are we talking of the near future (say, the next five years), the medium term (twenty-five years) or the long term (a century or more)?
