ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews strategies for documenting work analysis data. These data are used in the development of personnel selection procedures (i.e., any tool used to make an employment decision, such as hiring, promotion, termination, and pay raises). The documentation of work analysis data is critical for both organizational strategy and legal defensibility. Because work analysis is a tool for making decisions, documenting what those decisions are based on seems intuitive. Work analysis is not a static process, and there are many ways and tools for conducting and using a work analysis. For work analysis data to be useful to the organization, they must be presented in a way that is interpretable. Of course, in some situations work analyses may be summarized in ways that are unintelligible to the layperson responsible for making high-level organizational decisions.
