ABSTRACT

For the past 40 years I have consulted with predominantly white colleges and universities that were attempting to create hospitable climates for the faculty and students of Color they were bringing into the schools. Some schools have made changes in obvious ways: creating racially-based student clubs, beginning to serve ethnic foods in the dining halls, setting up ethnic studies programs and developing more inclusive curriculums. Yet those of us who are attempting to bring about institutional and interpersonal change continue to run up against unyielding resistance in every area of the institution and across all groups of stakeholders. To offer another way of moving ahead, this book shows genuine conversations about and across racial experiences.
