ABSTRACT

Table 10.1 shows that the music group is substantially, and highly significantly, more knowledgeable in music than the other groups, both in the students as a whole, and in the study sample. (See Appendix for changes in music scores from pre-to post-test.) This superiority in knowledge is far greater than either the maths or science groups demonstrated in their subject area (see Chapters 2 and 3). A simple rankorder analysis of the pre-test scores of the six student-teachers in the three subjects shows this effect clearly. The average rank order of the music sample was 52, compared to 17 for the mathematics sample and 6 for the science group. This pattern was not present in the mathematics and science scores, where the average ranks of the maths and science groups were only slightly above average, and not significantly different from the average rank order of the other groups.
