ABSTRACT

The Indian power sector scenario As on 31 March 2011, the total installed capacity of electricity generation in India is 173,626.4 MW, of which the shares of thermal power (112,824.48 MW), hydro power (37,567.4 MW), nuclear power (4,780 MW) and other sources (18,454.52 MW)4 are 64.98, 21.64, 2.75 and 10.63 per cent respectively. Of the total installed TPG capacity, coal-based power plants have a 83.2 per cent (93,918.38 MW) share, and gas and oil based power plants contribute 15.7 per cent (17,706.35 MW) and 1.1 per cent (1,199.75 MW) respectively. Of the total installed electricity generation capacity in the country, the state, central and the private sectors account for 47.49, 31.34 and 21.17 per cent respectively.
