ABSTRACT

In a reversal of The Wizard of Oz, the drag queens in Priscilla are spectacles of difference in a drab world, inhabitants of Emerald City who somehow end up in territories that appear to be much like Baum and MGM’s conceptions of Kansas. Sometimes in Priscilla, the three drag queens make spectacles of themselves, as when Tick, on a bet, joined by Adam, parades down the main street of Broken Hill in drag, or when the drag act performs musical numbers (to largely unenthusiastic audiences). Being a spectacle, however, also entails being victim to homophobia, as when anti-gay graffiti are spray-painted on their bus in Broken Hill, or when Adam is nearly gay-bashed in Coober Pedy.
