ABSTRACT
My name is Barbara Smedley. I have worked in child care all my working life. I believe passionately in the uniqueness of each individual, the striving of each human being for selfactualisation. In particular, I believe in the rights of children, their need for love and security, and to be understood. Many of us, as adults, have lost touch with the child within ourselves, and this has resulted in our becoming immune to the pains we once experienced. We therefore fail to see the hurts that all children experience and, in particular, the terrible pain that neglected and abused children feel.
