ABSTRACT

Lunch-time supervisors are not well paid. They can be interviewed on a Friday and be working the next week. They are on duty during a part of the day when the children in their charge are most ‘free’. Teachers will know that managing such ‘freedom’ requires considerable skill and initiative. To be sustainable and effective, such initiatives must be part of a properly resourced whole-school approach. Lunch-time supervisors are ‘significant’ adults. They should feel part of a team, with a common understanding of the organisation, values and vision of the school, and with a shared commitment to improving the quality of care.
