ABSTRACT

How do scholars of Leisure Studies define the current identity of their subject field, which is communal and soaked in history, to map out, as it were, a comprehensive analytical and theoretical account of the themes that currently sustain it, as well as the variety of critical perspectives and the key figures that are inspiring these? That is one reason why I have spent a good part of the last two years compiling the chapters that comprise the Handbook of Leisure Studies, which has been written in accordance with a basic objective: simply to put together the best edited collection that there is on Leisure Studies by bringing together some of the most perceptive commentators of the present moment in the subject field – the core ideas and cutting edge developments and their implications – in the hope that it will inspire a new generation of readers.
