ABSTRACT

Closed circuit television (CCTV) camera surveillance systems in central business districts (CBDs) in South Africa are largely used for the purpose of crime prevention, deterrence and control.1 However, many issues such as privacy, impact, effectiveness in preventing crime, public buy-in of installation and operational and policing imperatives are largely under-researched in South Africa. While information regarding CCTV control room operations training, installation specifications and operational and training requirements is available, this is largely in the private security sector domain and has not been academically researched.2
