ABSTRACT

Meeting the food demands of a global population expected to increase to 9 billion by 2050, and improving incomes and livelihoods, will require greater resilience to the impacts of climate change and other major improvements in agricultural production systems. While producing food, fuel and fibre, agriculture can also lower emissions and remove carbon from the atmosphere. The questions addressed in this chapter are (1) to what extent are there potential synergies or trade-offs between the changes in production required by food security objectives and those needed to increase mitigation; and (2) identifying means of enabling actions that contribute to both objectives.
