ABSTRACT

The media is one of the UK's most important industries. In 2008 the ‘creative sector’ (which also includes related fields such as fashion) employed almost two million people across over 150,000 companies. According to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport those companies contributed 5.6 per cent of the UK's Gross Value Added in 2008, and accounted for exports totalling over £17 billion. Despite the gloom that permeates parts of the industry, it is a fast-growing sector that is covered not just in the media press but in the financial press.
