ABSTRACT

We have long known that phones can promote health behavior change. Quitlines and other kinds of phone-based counseling services have been shown to be very effective in promoting smoking cessation, weight loss, and physical activity, and in modifying other health behaviors (Anderson & Zhu, 2007; Castro & King, 2002; Eakin, Lawler, Vandelanotte, & Owen, 2007). The advent of mobile phones and more recently smartphones raises the question of what advances these new technologies and their associated features provide beyond landlines and voice capabilities.
