ABSTRACT

In examining the issue of planning for effective teaching, Frances Christie’s point of departure is the fact that teaching is a goal driven, social activity, a fact best encapsulated in the practice of drawing up teaching programs and writing lesson plans. This, Christie argues, is a basis for another use for the concept of genre in educational settings. She defines genre as a staged, goal driven, purposive activity; in this sense, the notion of genre can be used, not only to describe language, but also to describe the teaching process. This latter use of the concept Christie terms ‘curriculum genre’.
