A View of the Revolt in the Spanish Press

This essay looks at an article entitled ‘India Inglesa. Su población y Razas’, published in Madrid in 1857 in the second volume of a journal called Escenas Contemporáneas. ¹ The journal covers a vast range of subjects as is shown on the cover page: political, parliamentary, biographical, necrological, scientific, literary and artistic. Further, a subheading says ‘Reports from the Foremost Municipalities and Towns of Spain’. The second volume is edited by Don Manuel Ovilo y Otero and comprises the issues from the months of September, October and November of 1857. Interestingly, at the end of the article, a note by Luis Estrada says that he had published the same article earlier in an accredited newspaper El Parlamento (The Parliament). Hence, we can deduce that the author of this piece is Luis Estrada, a political commentator of those times.
