[The following pages are taken from Whewell's Lectures on the History of Moral Philosophy,Cambridge, 1862. Only the first few pages that are largely of biographical interest have been omitted. Whewell, one of Mill's most distinguished and eminent contemporaries, wrote extensively on logic, ethics, metaphysics and philosophy of science. His Lectures is a perceptive analysis of various moral theories and made considerable impact at the time.
