ABSTRACT

I was in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2002 looking for a Kurdish-Persian bookshop in Husby (a stigmatized and marginalized housing area) but could not find the way. I asked a teenage boy if he knew where the bookshop was. He looked at me and said: ‘Are you pretending to be “svenne” with your nice “svenne” accent?’ 1 The boy turned out to have a Kurdish background.
