ABSTRACT

Past research has shown that memory abilities decline in old age (e.g., Hoyer & Verhaeghen, 2006). This decline, however, seems to be differential, with episodic memory being particularly vulnerable to the effects of aging (e.g., Craik & Jennings, 1992; Light, 1991; Naveh-Benjamin & Old, 2008; Zacks, Hasher, & Li, 2000). The mechanisms underlying this differential decline have drawn considerable research and debate (for a review, see Hoyer & Verhaeghen, 2006; Light, 1991; Salthouse, 1991).
