ABSTRACT
The development of the public health care system in Italy is marked by a process of national devolution that was started in the mid-1970s, and speeded up in the late 1990s, culminating in the 2000 legislation that granted also more fiscal autonomy to regional governments. As early as 1974 and 1975, the Parliament transferred to the regions the control of and responsibility for public hospitals.
