ABSTRACT
London developed rapidly as a centre of world trade from about the seventeenth century onwards. As a result of its success, the population of the built-up area reached over half a million by 1700 and doubled again to 1 million by the time of the first census in 1801. Economic and population growth continued through the nineteenth century so that the population had already reached some 6.5 million by 1911.
