ABSTRACT

The Charter School, Dulwich, London is a new school which is being established in existing educational premises (constructed in 1956–57 using a system-built approach). Such buildings are typical of many in the UK (and elsewhere) and as such offer an exceptional opportunity to develop ways of upgrading a significant percentage of the existing building stock. Figure 9.1 shows a site plan of the school with the rectilinear arrangement all too typical of these developments. Design work on redevelopment started in June 1999.
