ABSTRACT

It is getting chilly as the afternoon wind starts blowing in the Californian desert. Walking towards the car, Victor shakes himself because of the cold. He is on his way back to Bakersfield after visiting a couple of Peruvians who are currently working in the desert on labour contracts as shepherds. The landscape in early spring reminds him of the high plains of the Peruvian Andes, where he herded cattle as a child. Yet, for Victor that belongs to the past. He used to work as a shepherd himself in the United States, but ran away before his labour contract expired. After a couple of years as illegal immigrant, he decided to abandon his wife and children in Peru and marry a Mexican woman. They now live together in Bakersfield, earning a living as tailors.
