ABSTRACT

It is the duty and wisdom of Evangelical Churchmen to safeguard a small but growing minority of undergraduates exposed to peculiar temptations in a University city. Every member of that minority will eventually have more or less influence as a clergyman, schoolmaster, barrister, country squire, merchant or Indian civil servant. Every man who drifts away is so much loss to the side of Truth. If Charles Simeon was accustomed to say as he saw one undergraduate enter Trinity Church, Cambridge, ‘Here come 600 people’, what shall be said of the value of hundreds now in residence in Oxford, all waiting to be shepherded?19
