ABSTRACT

Today, all sciences are taught to all pupils from age 5 to 16. Yet, as we become increasingly dependent on the service sector of our economy, our society needs fewer and fewer individuals with a scientific knowledge or technical skills (DfEE 1996). Even in our daily lives, scientific knowledge becomes less and less useful with the ever increasing technological sophistication of our homes. We can no longer fix our domestic appliances without expert help. In such a context, what is the use and value of learning science?
