ABSTRACT
To judge by illustrations of school science laboratories at the turn of the century [1] both practical and paper work used to be strictly solitary and silent activities. Talking between pupils was made as difficult as possible so that the deathly quiet of good discipline could be maintained at all times and at all costs! Few, indeed, even supposed that there were any costs.
