ABSTRACT
Taken as a whole, the five thousand different languages spoken throughout the world constitute a single system. This evolving global constellation of languages takes its coherence from multilingualism. Multilingual speakers ensure the cohesion of the human race by linking different linguistic groups, either directly when polyglot speakers meet, or indirectly through translation by a third party.
