ABSTRACT

The title of this book links two major themes: the future of the European unification process and the future of the European “work societies”. The two sets of issues are significant in their own right, but might at first glance seem to have little to do with each other. Yet in its early stages, the political integration of Western Europe has indeed been pushed forward by concerns of its nation-states over the employment and welfare of their populations, and it is of utmost importance to examine – and, as the result will show, to maintain – this link today.
