ABSTRACT

Although European and world politics have been greatly transformed in recent decades, the media – including political journalism – may have changed even more. Many media changes have been triggered especially by linked developments in deregulation and technology which have then generated increased competition. Deregulation has affected the entire world economy since 1980 as the USA and various European and other countries have transferred public sector entities into commercial ownership and control. In much of Europe, for example, a predominantly public radio/television system changed into a commercial radio/television/cable/satellite/video system with a much bigger total programme output.
