ABSTRACT
The Indian sub-continent comprises five major countries: India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka; all except Nepal were part of the British Empire until the 1940s. Though politically independent today, these countries have over one sixth of the world's population and are related to each other geographically, historically and culturally. Apart from English, these countries share at least one major language with India.
