ABSTRACT
Issues of economic growth and development have been subject to a large number of theoretical and empirical analyses and have been debated intensively among politicians and economists also. The question whether international openness is an important part of a successful development strategy has been at the very centre of both research and the political debate after the Second World War and in particular during the past three decades.
