ABSTRACT

You might have noticed, if you hang around the magazine racks of 7–11 stores, that between March, 1985 and August, 1985, David Lee Roth was cover-boy for no less than seven slick rock magazines. I noticed. I also noticed that his old band Van Halen was featured on the covers of four more. I saved the pink section of the Sunday San Francisco Chronicle for 10 February, 1985, because it contained an interview with David Lee Roth. My roommate Bruce swiped a copy of People from work for me (what a pal) with David Lee Roth in the sub-celebrity spot. I sat on the floors of two separate used bookstores looking through piles of old copies of Rolling Stone and came away with three issues with articles on Van Halen (14 June, '79; 4 September, '80; and 21 June, '84). I bought a Van Halen poster and a Van Halen calendar. I bought an unauthorized paperback biography (Van Halen) a picture book (Van Halen) and The Van Halen Scrapbook. I even bought two Van Halen albums.
