Peer counselling and support book
Introduction The purpose of this chapter is to highlight the potential which exists within student peer groups for active participation in counselling-related activities. Troubled students often find it easier to talk with peers as a first point of contact in the process of seeking help. In addition, an effective network of students, trained in peer counselling and peer support, significantly extends the scope of the guidance network provided by teachers and counsellors. Constructive collaboration between these student and adult networks is of mutual benefit to both parties, and teachers can play a very significant role in such a partnership. This kind of collaboration also provides an alternative, more positive perspective on the role of the student peer group.
