ABSTRACT

The model of family counselling that underpins the workshop outlined in this chapter is based on Minuchin’s (1984) structural model that emphasises the development of clear, direct and specific communication between parents and children. This approach has been developed by the author and a colleague (Fuhrmann and Chadwick, 1995) on the basis of their professional experience as family therapists at the Centro de Terapia Sistemica, Santiago, Chile. We call this the ‘Empowering Families’ model and the aim of this chapter is to prepare teachers to conduct parent workshops using a preventative perspective based on this model.
