ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the relationship between values and practices in Western European gender roles and their representation in contemporary situation comedy, and examines how gender inequality is experienced in different cultural contexts. It does this by looking closely into the different ways in which situation comedies represent stereotypical and alternative myths of femininity and masculinity, from the point of view of female participation in paid work, the domestic division of labour, and the institutions of marriage and family using four case type countries, Britain, Sweden, Greece and Spain.
