ABSTRACT
In a global perspective women in the European Union have a comparatively advantageous position. Equal opportunities policies, which provide a framework for working conditions and wage negotiations, exist in all countries and the overall material level of well being is high. However, significant crossnational differences in the living and working conditions of women and men remain. These differences are more noticeable at the regional level and are perhaps greater still at the level of households and workplaces.
