Male Violence and Control

Male violence, intertwined with men’s control over women, seems endemic in European societies. The effort to raise awareness of this disturbing fact has stood in the way of considering possible spatial variations and the conditions to which these might be attributed. This chapter will look at how and why male violence might differ between countries, regions or subcultural spaces, examine the available European data, and discuss how possible differences might be interpreted.
