ABSTRACT
This chapter presents a selective and critical world review of ‘open schooling’ – the use of the methods of distance education to provide basic education to adults or children.1
Open schooling extends formal education to learners outside traditional school environments. This may be achieved through special institutions – ‘open schools’ – or through the use of the techniques of distance education (DE) to extend opportunity for schooling to those otherwise excluded. The methods of DE are also used to enhance the range and quality of instruction which takes place in school. This may be through using distance teaching materials to take high-quality teaching to every child, through expanding subject choice, or through enabling educational communication outside the school. Such techniques are increasingly known as ‘open classroom’.2
