ABSTRACT

The South Durban basin, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, forms the backdrop for a special study of the chemical industry and in particular the major role played in the region by two of the country’s major oil refineries, Engen and SAPREF. After outlining the scope of these developments and their impact on the environment, the Engen case study is used to illustrate the crisis management scenario to protect the interest of those communities living close to Engen.
