ABSTRACT
Culture is a fundamental concept in sociology, identified by Giddens (1987) as one of the four central influences on modernity, and is a much used term forming the basis for a wide range of scholarly reflection and research on the nature of human society. The contributions of Williams (1958), Geertz (1973), Hall (1986) and Bourdieu (1984) indicate its diverse and complex nature.
