ABSTRACT

Churchill's performance at Harrow fell short of what was needed to gain admission to university, which was not necessarily the goal of many public school boys; instead, he decided to pursue a military career. It is difficult to assess Churchill's constancy in political matters or the meaning of his shift back to the Conservative party during the period of turbulence that accompanied the collapse of the Liberal party. At the beginning of the Second World War he was brought back into the government and, after serving under Chamberlain at the Admiralty for half a year, he was summoned to Buckingham Palace to receive the offer to lead the government. During the early years of the Second World War Churchill's vision seemed to be as much in touch with the times as it had been out of touch a decade earlier.
