ABSTRACT

Uzzaman always wanted to act and walked from India to Rawalpindi, where his brother was a radio producer, to work as a child actor in radio drama. His big break came in 1977 when he moved to Lahore and began working for Pakistan Television (PTV), the public service broadcaster, in many of the country's high-quality television dramas and serials. Uzzaman was already a star when director Salman Peerzada approached him to act in his film (see f i lm and cinema), Mela, in which he played five characters. The film, an allegorical political tale about the military regime, fell foul of the authorities and had to be completed in London. Uzzaman arrived here in 1982 and has built his career in the UK.
