ABSTRACT

Theory and research on organizational politics has expanded rapidly in recent decades, and it is reflected in many journal articles, books, and book chapters as well as conference presentations in management and organizational studies. A quick literature search was conducted and resulted in more than 100 journal articles mentioned in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) during the years 1968–2010 with the precise term organizational politics in its title. A rough breakdown by decades indicates a growing trend. The numbers rise from 19 between 1981 and 1990 to 31 between 1991 and 2000 and up to 36 between 2001 and 2010. When extending the search to include variants of the term organizational politics, the total number of studies found that have dealt with such issues is even more impressive and reaches several hundred, with many of them published in the recent decade only.
