On the whole, I cannot help thinking that Mr. Swinburne’s hostile criticism of ‘The Idylls of the King’ for their omission of the taint in the king’s life and character, is virtually a complaint that the poet has not excluded the whole halo of spiritual glory from the Arthurian traditions, and substituted an old Greek tragedy for a mystic mediaeval vision….
