ABSTRACT
From A General View of the Stage (1759). This book is sometimes still erroneously attributed to Samuel Derrick. But in an article in the Times Literary Supplement, 9 August 1923, ‘Samuel Derrick and Thomas Wilkes’ (p. 533), W.J.Lawrence showed that Wilkes was not ‘a pseudonym’ of Derrick, (as DNB had stated), since they were two separate people. Like Derrick, Wilkes was Irish, and Lawrence discovered an obituary notice in the National Library, Dublin, recording that Wilkes died on 13 June 1786.
