ABSTRACT
It is therefore timely and important to examine Islamic China not merely as a historical exoticism but mainly as a prototype of a vital Muslim minority that may be undergoing significant developments in response to the winds of change that have been sweeping through the vast Islamic world which now encompasses some forty-odd countries and more than eight hundred million believers.
